Your winter commute doesn’t have to be a drag. Stay warm, dry, and safe during your winter commute this year with our helpful commuting tips.
Riding your bike to school or work during the winter months will be safer and more comfortable with these tips:
- Equip tough tires that can handle the rougher elements. Also use wide tires to get better traction in the snow and ice.
- Adding fenders will protect you from wet and mucky tire backsplash.
- Use clip on lights to stay visible. Also wear reflective apparel or bright colours to help drivers see you in the snow and rain.
- Dress in fitted, light layers and ensure no clothing can get tangled in your bike.
Walking to work becomes more challenging in the winter due to snow, ice, and extreme cold. Keep yourself safe and warm with these simple tips:
- Bundle up with wool. Start with a thin breathable layer, then add wool, and finally a waterproof layer.
- Protect yourself from the elements. Invest in touch-screen compatible gloves, a hat, waterproof and insulated coat, and boots with both insulation and thick non-slip treads.
- Ensure you are visible for passing cars, bikes, and other vehicles.
Take a transit bus or subway for a warm, safe ride to your destination. However, protect yourself from the cold and wet conditions to and from the station with these tips:
- Wear warm boots with non-slip thick treads for your walk to the station or bus stop. You may still have to wade through snow covered walkways, snow drifts, or slushy puddles.
- Dress warmly in layers that you can remove if you get too warm on the bus or subway.
- Stay in designated waiting areas and never step out onto the road when waiting for the bus.
- Check with the Transit App on Google Play or the App Store for up to date information on route schedules, notifications of delays, and access alternate routes.
- Avoid a cold draft on the bus by choosing a seat furthest from the doors.
